One student can make a big difference! On Monday, Brooklyn enjoyed a day as our principal for raising just over $1,000 for the Hornet Hike. Brooklyn enjoyed greeting students, passing out treats to teachers, and many of the fun aspects of running the school. We are so grateful for Brooklyn and her heart for others! #WarsawInspires

Washington 4th graders are dissecting frogs this week. Thank you to Mrs. Gough's High School Dissection class for leading the lab. Students opened up frog stomachs and found beetles and fish inside!! Students also learned what kind of careers would require taking dissection classes.

Generous living is the Hornet way! Washington's Student Council hosted their annual Food Drive last week. We collected a total of 2,412 items!! All items were boxed up and picked up by Combined Community Services -- a non-profit organization that exists to provide hope and resources to families in need. Thank you, Washington families, for your generosity and willingness to help those in need! We are grateful to be able to collect and donate these much needed items. #WarsawInspires

Friday, our kindergarten students had an exciting visit from a local firefighter! They learned about when to call 911, where to find fire alarms, and what items are safe to play with. They also discovered the importance of knowing their home address. It was an unforgettable day of learning and fun! 🚒👨‍🚒

Third-grade students are transforming their written personal narratives into interactive coding projects using Scratch Jr. with Mr. Pike. Through this activity, they learned to bring their stories to life by creating animations and sequences, connecting literacy with coding fundamentals. Such a fun way to blend storytelling with technology! #WarsawInspires

Washington 4th graders learned about different kinds of rocks and fossils. This program was led by imi Construction. They taught the students about sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. This was a hands-on activity as students had their own rock collection that they could take home!

This morning we were treated to a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by our choir members! Children's voices lifted in song is one of our favorite sounds! #WarsawInspires

Washington will be collecting for our annual Student Council Food Drive next week! We will be collecting nonperishable items starting Monday November 11th through Friday November 15th. All items will be donated to Combined Community Services, a non-profit organization that exists to provide comfort, hope, and resources for neighbors in need! The class that donates the most items will win a class prize. Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Tucker (stucker@warsawschools.org) or Mrs. Niemi (sniemi@warsawschools.org) with any questions! Most needed items are peanut butter, jelly, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, macaroni & cheese, pancake mix or baking mix, syrup, pop tarts, oatmeal, soups, box dinners, rice, and canned goods.

October wrap up! We used the last week of October to celebrate so many good things at Washington, whether it's our Students of the Month or our colorful staff. What we know for sure is that every crayon in the box matters here. #WarsawInspires

While we think every day is a great day to be a Hornet, today was one of the best ever! Students enjoyed Fall celebrations and a "YES Day" as a reward for their fundraising efforts to make the Hornet Hike a unanimous success across all grade levels. Young people can make a big difference! #WarsawInspires

Washington 4th graders are learning about the Engineering Process by creating earthquake-proof homes out of Jenga blocks and clay. Today was test today and tomorrow they will redesign and test again based on their home's performance. #WarsawInspires

This week our 5th and 6th grade classes participated in packing meals for Feed My Starving Children. What a wonderful opportunity to make a global impact from our corner of the world. Proud of our Hornets and the wonderful job they did raising money for this cause and their service to others. #WarsawInspires

Yesterday, our Kindergarten Hornets made the most of the terrific fall weather by making a visit to Pumpkin Fantasyland. There they learned all about a fall perennial favorite, pumpkins! We think our little pumpkins are the sweetest little pumpkin scholars around! #WarsawInspires

Mr. Bailey's first grade class has been hard at work bottling up some delicious Washington Wildflower Honey. It's back in stock! 1 bottle for $10, 2 bottles for $15. Cash or checks (payable to Washington STEM) accepted. You may pick it up in the office or send money with your student while supplies last.

Instructional coaches work behind the scenes. Their vital roles often go unnoticed, but they often serve as the linchpin to our academic successes. They strive to create collaborative spaces for teachers and students. We couldn't be more grateful for Mrs. Corson and Mr. Pike. You inspire us to find new paths of learning and to develop new skills. #WarsawInspires

Today we celebrate our custodians on National Custodian Day. At Washington we feel that we've been blessed with the best. While most of our custodial staff is camera shy, we were able to catch our head custodian with one of our Kindergarten classes. Thank you to all of our custodians. We see you, you inspire us, and your work shines brightly across the building. #WarsawInspires

Congratulations to the Washington Hornets Volleyball team. They had a great season and will be playing in the championship game next Monday, October 7th. If you would like to come out and show your support, the game starts at 6pm in the Tiger Den at the high school. Students get in for free, adults will cost $5. Let's show our support for the girls on the team by wearing green on Monday! Go Hornets and Good Luck!! #WarsawInspires

Washington sixth graders were given the opportunity to dissect squid thanks to Mrs. Gough's high school dissection class. Students were able to learn about the inner workings of a squid, observing squid eggs and writing with squid ink! Thank you to Mrs. Gough and her students for making this such a fun learning experience! #WarsawInspires

This month Hornet Heroes celebrated the theme of self-control. Our guest reader was our Principal, Mrs. Sleighter, who read We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins. She also engaged the students in a fun game to help them practice self-control. We truly appreciate all that she does for our students! #WarsawInspires

Fourth graders walked down to Eagle Creek to learn alongside Soil & Water Conservation volunteers. Stations included getting in the creek to search for macroinvertebrates, identifying macroinvertebrates, and learning about tree identification. Students visit Eagle Creek twice a year to collect and identify macroinvertebrates and analyze if the water is clean or dirty. Good news -- students found macroinvertebrates in all four categories and were able to determine that Eagle Creek is healthy!! #WarsawInspires
